| A new species of titi monkey, Catticebus, is described based on five specimens obtained from the state of Sergipe, north-eastern Brazil. It is a member of the Personatus group, but is easily distinguished from the other forms. The most noticeable differences are in the pelage coloration, the forehead, crown, and ear being black, and having a zebra-like, striped pattern on the anterior half of the back. Distinct features of its dental morphology and craniometry are also described. |

| The variables in habitat studies are usually transformed in such a way that they become abstractions and intuition is lost. We tested a new method for the analysis of habitat using data collected in a grid laid at the "restinga de Maricá", in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Thirty-seven microhabitat variables were measured at each trap station. We assume that these variables characterize the microhabitat structure at the moment when measurements were taken. | In September 1981, seeds of Arisaema were harvested by Carla Teune, Hortus Botanicus Leiden, near Liuba, area of Mt Minya Konka (Gonga Shan), Szechuan (Sichuan) Province, China, at 3600 m altitude. During the trip, with Roy Lancaster and others, no pressed herbarium specimen was collected. Michael Hoog, who runned a well known Dutch Nursery, was given five lots of seed numbered CT 368 to CT 372, all provisionally labeled A. consanguineum Schott. All numbers were collected the same day along the same path. After the seedlings flowered, it appeared there was no reason to keep them separate; they were merged and distributed in the trade as Arisaema CT 369 (Antoine Hoog, 1998, private communication). | The Hippomaneae (Euphorbiaceae) are revised for Malesia. Only Excoecaria and Homalanthus are excluded. A key to all Malesian genera is provided. The generic concepts applied differ markedly from previous treatments for the region with the following genera accepted: Balakata, Falconeria, Gymnanthes, Microstachys, Sapium, Shirakiopsis, Stillingia and Triadica. All of these genera show peculiarities in biogeography and ecology, which are discussed. Among these genera only Stillingia is kept as traditionally used. Balakata (based on Sapium sect. | A hidrelétrica de Balbina localiza-se no rio Uatumã, a 170 km de Manaus, pela BR/174. O enchimento do reservatório iniciou-se em outubro/87 e a usina começou a funcionar em fevereiro de 1989, com apenas uma das suas cinco turbinas. Apesar da redução da diversidade da ictiofauna e dos danos ambientais e sociais decorrentes do represamento, algumas espécies de peixes proliferaram no reservatório, resultando no incremento da atividade pesqueira, praticada basicamente sobre os estoques de tucunaré (Cichla spp). A explotação desta espécie, iniciada logo após a formação do reservatório, vem sendo feita até os dias atuais, com uma produção média em torno de 500 toneladas/ano e da qual participam 100 a 160 pescadores profissionais, além de dezenas de amadores. | Agricultural producers face significant price risk. For some products, farmers may hedge this risk in well-functioning futures markets. For several products, however, no such risk management instrument is readily available. We suggest that farmers reduce price risk by organizing cooperatives where members diversify by creating "accounting" portfolios. The approach is illustrated with data from the Dutch flower market, and some practical problems connected to such cooperative risk pooling in agriculture are addressed. |

| The 1997-1998 El Niño southern oscillation caused elevated sea temperatures that resulted in global coral bleaching. Coral reefs constitute an important biological resource in terms of their complex biodiversity and are the basis for tropical fisheries and marine ecotourism. They represent one of Mozambique’s main coastal assets, and coastal communities and the growing tourism industry rely mainly on reef-based resources.
